Growing Guide

Cultivate your own patch of blue. With the right conditions, blueberry bushes can thrive for decades.

Soil Requirements

The most critical factor in growing blueberries is soil pH. Blueberries are acid-loving plants that require a soil pH between 4.0 and 5.0. Most garden soils are not naturally this acidic.

Ideal Soil Texture

Well-drained, loose, and high in organic matter. Sandy loam is perfect.

Mulching

Maintain 2-4 inches of wood mulch (pine needles or wood chips) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Light & Location

Blueberries need full sun to grow well and produce fruit. Choose a spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Avoid planting near trees, which will compete for water and nutrients and may shade the bushes. Good air circulation is also important to prevent fungal diseases.

Watering & Care

Blueberries have shallow root systems and are sensitive to drought. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Water deeply once a week (more often in extreme heat).
  • Avoid overhead watering to keep leaves dry and prevent disease.
  • Prune annually in late winter to remove dead wood and encourage new growth.
  • Remove flowers in the first year to let the plant establish strong roots.
